Many components used for general industrial purposes and in the automotive sector have oily, greasy or dirty surfaces. This poses a special challenge to product labeling and protection since standard films do not adhere to such substrates. Schreiner ProTech develops customized solutions that effectively protect components during production and transport processes in this special field of applications as well.
In general industries, films perform a wide variety of tasks and are used for marking or process control. Protection Films reliably cover components of various shapes, sizes and materials, thus protecting them against damage, dirt or contamination. In these areas, Schreiner ProTech offers a comprehensive portfolio of film solutions. Properties such as tack force and peel-off force or temperature resistance can be customized according to the production process and desired protective function. This results in tailored protection coupled with process improvement and reduced labor effort also for hard-to-bond substrates.
The Protection Films ensure reliable covering, even in slightly oily applications, which reduces the effort of cleaning components. Relevant parameters such as required tack force, temperature, bonding substrate and retention time are included in the development project. Solutions for non-residual, semi-permanent or permanent adhesion are possible. Thus, the films are equally well suited for short-term use and for permanent coverings for different surfaces. In addition, the films can be made up of several segments that can be detached during assembly as required by the individual process steps. The film parts are provided with starter tabs for ease of use. For component marking purposes, Schreiner ProTech prints the Protection Films with information for process control, warnings or assembly instructions, or data for component tracking. Security features for enhanced authenticity protection may be additionally integrated as well.

Avalanche victim detectors significantly increase the chances of survival. Mammut's "Barryvox" high-tech tool is capable of precisely locating several people at once. For this purpose, the device is equipped with highly complex electronics that must withstand even the toughest environmental conditions. A sturdy housing and Schreiner ProTech's Pressure Compensation Seals (PCS) provide adequate protection. The PCSs ensure ventilation of the avalanche beacons and prevent the penetration of moisture.
In case of emergency, avalanche rescue beacons can save lives. That's why they should be part of the basic equipment of all Alpine sports lovers. In the race against time, every single minute counts. Quick, reliable and easy handling of the devices is therefore of paramount importance. "It is crucial that winter sports enthusiasts be able to rely on their equipment," says Ilari Dammert, Product Manager of Mammut. Multiple antenna systems, digital technology as well as distance and direction indicators allow for short searching times. Falls or weather conditions must not impede the device's function.
The Pressure Compensation Seals made by Schreiner ProTech ensure ventilation and pressure compensation in the housing of Mammut's "Barryvox" avalanche rescue beacon. "Reliable functioning of the devices requires proper ventilation on the one hand as well as protection against humidity and dirt on the other hand," explains Michael Spoerl, Product Manager at Schreiner ProTech. Pressure Compensation Seals prevent the production of overpressure in the electronics housing. In addition, a special membrane makes them completely watertight. "The membrane successfully withstood our stress test that simulates a dive in a mountain stream," says Dammert. Conclusion: Users can be certain that the detection devices always work - even in heavy snow, rain or humidity.

Küster Automotive Control Systems GmbH equips actuators for controlled acoustic valves with pressure compensation seals that are directly integrated into the nameplate. The TLMI and FINAT award-winning innovation from Schreiner ProTech not only saves space but also cuts process times and production costs.
The packaging space for automotive exhaust systems is becoming smaller and smaller. Therefore, Küster uses the latest technologies available for the production of actuators. The company has opted for nameplates with integrated pressure compensation seals (PCS) from Schreiner ProTech that provide a space-saving solution for marking and venting due to their minimized height. This reduces material consumption and cuts process times by as much as 40 %. While the installation of conventional venting systems involves an additional time- and cost-intensive production step the simultaneous application of the PCS and nameplate in a single functional component simplifies the production process.
For this special product application, the experts from Schreiner ProTech adapted the materials and the adhesive to suit the requirements of the actuator. As a result, the PCS in the nameplate easily resists temperatures in the exhaust system that range from -40 °C to +150 °C. The specialty labels are delivered on rolls. Küster prints the labels directly on location and subsequently applies them to the component in a fully automated assembly process. This ensures process-reliable installation of the nameplates with the integrated PCS in the actuators. The product is now successfully being used in production at Audi.
The innovative solution also convinced the judges in this year’s TLMI awards competition where the specialty labels received the first-place award in the “Tag - Industrial and/or systems” category. Furthermore, the FINAT judging panel rated the product solution as particularly innovative and recognized it with the special “Innovation” award.

The Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute (TLMI) has awarded first place in the “Tag - Industrial and/or systems” category to the nameplate-integrated pressure compensation seals. In selecting the award winners, the US label industry association places its main focus on the innovative content and technical quality of the product entries.
The product solution from Schreiner ProTech convinced the TLMI Award judges with its combination of marking and ventilation in a single functional component, which rolls two separate process steps into one. For optimal adhesion, the adhesive quality of the PCS in the nameplate is modified to suit the characteristics of the component to which it is applied. The specialty labels can be used at temperatures from -40 °C to +150 °C.
Conventional RFID transponders hit their limits when they are applied directly on metal. By contrast, the new ((rfid))-DistaFerr SL (UHF) label by Schreiner ProTech remains completely unimpressed in the neighborhood of conductive materials and allows for excellent reading results.
The ((rfid))-DistaFerr SL Label uses a special antenna technology enabling the reliable identification of metallic components. Even with the smallest dimensions the label offers a reading range of between one and four meters and is therefore ideal when it comes to labeling metal and carbon components in the automotive industry, production and other industries. Other areas of application include load carriers, metal containers and skeleton containers in logistics. The application of the ((rfid))-DistaFerr SL Label does not require large surfaces thanks to its flexible and thin structure. Therefore, the RFID label is also suitable in settings where the available surface does not suffice for plastic-encased RFID hard tags.
As the ((rfid))-DistaFerr SL Label is sturdy and resistant to weathering, it is suitable for outdoor applications. Imprinting the labels that come on reels with TTR printers as well as programming can be carried out at the customer’s facilities. Upon request, Schreiner ProTech will customize the label with features such as barcodes, plain writing or logos.

The FINAT judges rated the nameplate-integrated pressure compensation seals (PCS) by Schreiner ProTech as a particularly innovative entry at this year’s Label Award competition and recognized the product solution with a special award in the “Innovation Group.” The functional assembly components reliably compensate for pressure differences in electronic component housings such as bicycle batteries and are applied to the component together with the nameplate in a single process step. This saves material and reduces production time.
At the 32nd Label Competition of the worldwide association of the self-adhesive labeling industry, Schreiner ProTech had the pleasure of being awarded 1st place in the “Innovation” group. “Innovation is an integral component of our corporate values. We continue to subject even proven product solutions such as the pressure compensation seals to further development by combining various technologies,” says Michael Spörl, Product Manager PCS, at Schreiner ProTech. The objective of the award-winning product solution was to merge two separate process steps by integrating marking and ventilation in a single functional component. This saves process times and significantly reduces costs.
The integration of the pressure compensation seal into a BleedStop label forms the core element of the innovation. The film-based labels equipped with a BleedStop system prevent adhesive bleeding and ensure reliable adhesion to rough surfaces. This was particularly important for the part in a harsh production environment. As well as the adhesion substrate consisting of rough metal with slightly oily contamination the salt spray fog test that is used to check the corrosion resistance of components had to be considered.
Employees from product and process management, product development, manufacturing and quality management achieved the solution that was tested with the customer prior to being used in the field. The space-saving multifunctional marking offers flexibility in terms of application and, in addition, has a positive effect on the visual appearance of a product. The nameplates with integrated PCS are delivered on rolls. The customer can directly print and subsequently dispense and apply them in a fully automated assembly process. The specialty labels are also available as pre-printed versions and are suitable for manual application as well.

A further development of Schreiner ProTech’s Color Laser Film (CLF) saves production time and resources. The new specialty film serves to cover components and housings. The film can be custom-marked and cut as needed for higher flexibility. By reducing the number of previously required variants and inventory levels of specific covers the new CLF product successfully responds to one of the challenges in modern manufacturing operations.
The new dimensionally stable and robust variant of Schreiner ProTech’s Color Laser Film offers major flexibility in designing housing covers. Covers in various sizes, with optional cut-outs, and marked with different types of information, can now be produced from a single material. Software is used for flexible creation of the desired designs.
Two different laser systems integrated in a single line are required for laser cutting and laser marking: An Nd:YAG laser is used to mark the Color Laser Film and a synchronized CO2 laser subsequently cuts the film into the desired shape and size – at a speed of 200 cm per second. As this solution allows different batch sizes of housing covers to be produced in a single pass for just-in-time delivery, excess inventories of film variants or delivery bottlenecks are avoided.
